            John F. Henderson, 61, died at 6:40 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 8, 1942, to the late Hayward T. and Mildred E. (Pitts) Henderson.

            He married the former Norma J. Gowens in Alton on July 7, 1962. She survives.

            He graduated from Alton High School in 1960 and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1964. He was employed with Amoco Oil for 32 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of Trinity A. M. E. Church in Alton.

            In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Christopher Henderson and Jonathan Henderson, both of Alton;  three daughters, Kelly Henderson and Devon Henderson, both of Alton, and Lavinia Goodman of Columbus GA; six grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony Henderson of Phoenix and Richard (Butchie) Henderson of Houston; one sister, Carolyn Hunter of St. Louis; one god-daughter, Stacy L. Thomas of Memphis, TN; two aunts, Olga Collier of St. Louis and Harriett Lumpkins of Alton; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

            Besides his parents, his best friend, Charles Green, preceded him death.

            Visitation and services were at Trinity A.M. E. Church in Alton with the Rev. Frederick K. Gaddy officiating.

            Burial was at Upper Alton Cemetery. Cathy M. Williams and sons Funeral Home in Godfrey was in charge of arrangements.

John was one of those people it was easy to like and enjoy being around. His smile, his intelligence...a special guy.
