Robert W. “Bob” Smith

ST. LOUIS

Robert Weindel “Bob” Smith died after intestinal by-pass surgery for weight loss at a St. Louis Hospital in 1978.  Bob was born in December 1942 to George and Mildred Smith. His mother's maiden name may have been Weindel.

Bob lived in Upper Alton most of his school years, attending College Avenue Presbyterian Church. The 1960 AHS Tatler lists him as being in DE club, Science club, Latin Club, and Football Mgr.  He also was a member of the Civil Air Patrol where he made good friends with Jon Hayes. He is remembered as smart, fun and very nice.

He married a girl named Sharon and the couple had at least two children, twins, born in 1970 or January of 1971.

He remained friends with Jon Hayes as an adult, and Judy Kerwin Hayes remembers calling Bob’s wife Sharon for tips on taking care of a baby after her first daughter was born in February 1971.

In addition to his wife and twins, Bob was survived by an older sister, Georgia, and a brother, Larry Smith.

Robert W. Smith was buried in the Upper Alton Cemetery.

[Information came from Judy Kerwin Hayes, Sandy Frasier Sims, the records of the Upper Alton Cemetery which lists Robert W. Smith, 1942 – 1978, and the AHS 1960 Tatler. Mhl]

I went to school with Bob from the second grade thru High School. Second thru sixth we hung around together the most, after that we went different ways with different interest.I always found him fun and interesting. He was a member of the Cival Air Patrol.

I remember Bob well. I think we went from kindergarten through high school together. We were often together in class due to having the same last name. We walked to East Junior together most every day and hung out a lot till we were juniors at AHS, then we went our separate ways.

I think Bob died in the 70s due to complications from intestinal bypass surgery. He survives in my mind.
