James W. Stewart, 60, died at 8:29 a.m. Friday, July 4, 2003, at Saint Anthony's Health Center in Alton. He was born on Sept. 4, 1942, in Alton, to the late John Edward Stewart and Mae

(Owens) Stewart of Alton. He married the former Patricia Yvonne Stamper June 30, 1967, in Jacksonville.  She survives.

He was a former police officer for the Wood River Police Department and Police Chief for Brighton. He was also a U.S. Army Vietnam era veteran.

In addition to his wife and his mother, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Danete "Dee" and Ronald Thorp of Fosterburg; a son, Dan Stewart of Godfrey; a grandson, Dayne Thorp; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Gayle Stewart of Delaware and Ned and Ann Stewart of Ohio. His father preceded him in death.

Private graveside services were held Monday, July 7, 2003 at Fosterburg Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton was in charge of arrangements.
