Marilyn Walters (Cottonaro) VIEW PROFILE

Marilyn Walters (Cottonaro)

Marilyn Ann Walters was born August 28, 1942. She died Sept. 2, 1975. Way too young. She was the daughter of  William Walters and Catherine Rose (Walsh) Walters.

After high school Marilyn worked at Illinois Bell Telephone in Alton in the traffic department. She married Robert Raymond Cornelius of Perryville, Missouri, July, 1962. She had a daughter named Lisa Marie Cornelius. She was divorced from Robert Corneilus in 1968. She remarried Earl Cottonaro, had a son, Ryan Cottonaro, and later divorced.

Marilyn had liver problems throughout her young life.  At one point she had surgery to have half her liver removed. She was in and out of the hospital and got a staff infection that led to septicemia. After she recovered from the septicemia, she never regained her joy of life. She became addicted to prescription pain killers. This addiction led to her death in 1975, a suicide. Marilyn was dearly loved by her family.

Marilyn was survived by her parents, her daughter, now Lisa Greeling, her son Ryan Cottonaro,  her younger brother, Richard Walters, her sister-in-law Marie Gerler, and other extended family members.  Her funeral was held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, with Monsignor H. J.Knoedler officiating. She was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in a triple grave plot, where her parents were later laid to rest.

My thanks to Marie Gerler, Perryville MO  and Lisa Greeling, Bethalto IL  for their generosity and time in providing me with the above information. Marilyn Waide Lake

I wish I had known Marilyn better in high school. She had a really rough time in her young adulthood, but she is loved and remembered by her daughter, Lisa, and other members of her family. Lisa had two children, and two grandchildren who have turned out to be great people. Lisa is very proud of them, and they live as Marilyn's legacy. The fact that Marilyn's parents, William and Charlotte had her buried in a grave next to their eventual resting places, shows how much they loved her, too. I pray that she rests in peace.

I do remember going to see her when she lived off of Humbert Rd in a little house not for from KMart.  Her little girl was just a baby.  That was the last time I ever saw her and that was a long time ago.  I never did know what happened.  May she rest in peace.  I'm really sorry to hear about her troubles.  May God bless her daughter and her family.
