Odis "Paul" Junior Washpun died at 2 p.m., April 26, 1988 at Washaw Medical  in Reno, Nevada after a lengthy illnes from cancer of the bone marrow.  His brother Clark was by his side.  He was born in Brinkley, Arkansas, March 10, 1941, the son of Odis Washpun and Ernestine (Grant) Washpun. After his family moved to Alton, Odis attended Alton Public Schools.

            Odis joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from Alton High School in 1960,  beginning and ending his service in San Diego CA. He lived in Oakland and San Diego for many years after his naval service. When he died, he was living in Reno Nevada, working as a chef at The Circus Circus casino and club.

            Odis loved life and enjoyed playing street ball as a boy growing up in Alton. Later he played football in junior high school. He also liked fishing.

            His sister Ollena, a 1959 graduate of Alton High, said that she thought Odis might have learned his profession by working as a cook in the Navy. She knew he loved to cook.

            At the time of his death, Odis was single with no children. He was survived by two sisters: Ollena Washpun Moore and JoAnne Pittman; and three brothers: Clark, Richard and Gregory Washpun, all of Alton.  His parents died earlier.

            Memorial and funeral services for Odis were held at Williams Funeral Home on Central Avenue, Alton.  He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Alton, with a military plaque marking his grave.

Sat next to Odis in a class, he was a funny guy, kept me laughing. Sorry he is gone
