Even though haven't seen Dale in years, I feel as if we've lost a good friend. He will be missed. Sympathy to his family, wish I could say something more comforting.
Leonard “Dale” Armstrong died on March 6, 2019, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park, KS. He was born on October 15, 1944, in Lakewood, OH, to Donna (Weaver) and Leonard Armstrong.
Dale attended the Alton, IL, public schools and graduated from Alton High School in 1962. He graduated from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville Campus with a degree in Professional Writing in 1968. He was the Editor of the Alestle student newspaper while at SIU-E as well as a member of the SIU-E AFROTC program and after graduation he began his active duty service with the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Whiteman AFB, Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan, and Kelly AFB in San Antonio, TX. While stationed at Kelly AFB he completed his Master's Degree in Mass Communications from University of Northern Colorado. After his completion of 8 years in the USAF, he resigned his commission. He spent the entirety of 1976, during the US Bi-Centennial traveling throughout our beautiful country, with his wife and 2 children in a 24' motorhome.
After their year of travels they returned to Alton, IL, where Dale worked for Shell Oil at their Wood River, IL, refinery in Public Relations. He took an opportunity to join the staff of the St Louis Globe Democrat in St Louis as features editor. In 1985, Dale moved to the Kansas City, KS, Environmental Protection Agency - Region 7 in Public Affairs until his retirement in 2008.
After his retirement, Dale once again returned to traveling the country in a motorhome with his wife until November of 2018, when he settled back down in Olathe, KS.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents Leonard in 1995, and Donna Armstrong, in 2010, as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Dale is survived by his wife of 52 ½ years Gayle E. (Worden) Armstrong of Olathe, KS; their son Mark and his wife Joni (Armstrong) of Cambridge, IA, and their daughter Christie Armstrong and her husband, Vernon Brown, of Paola, KS, and a step-grandson, Vernon Brown III of Louisburg, KS. His brother Don and his wife Linda (Hodge) Armstrong of Mill Creek, Washington, his niece Amy Armstrong and her daughter, Gracey and his nephew, Erik Armstrong and his daughters Kiley and Kayla of Los Angeles.
He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and their extended family members in Metropolis, IL, Sequim, WA, Azel and Houston, TX, Denver, Elgin, IL, Hebron, KY, and Sheffield Lake, OH.
Dale is also survived by 4 loving and caring grand-dogs of Cambridge, IA and Paola, KS.
