David L. Whetstine
July 30, 1950 – Oct. 3, 2024

David L. Whetstine, 74, of Altoona, died Thursday morning at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, a son of the late Cloyd C. and Betty I. (Gassenhoover) Whetstine. He married Vera J. Black on Oct. 7, 1977, in Winchester, Va.
Surviving are his wife, Vera; two daughters, Angela L. Stich (Frank Singley) of Boalsburg and Julie A. Whetstine of Altoona; three grandchildren: Madelyn Watt, Eliot Stich and Alayna Price; a sister, Joan L. Skelley (Ted) of Altoona; and numerous extended family members.
David was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Aaron Whetstine; and a brother, Richard A. Whetstine.
Mr. Whetstine was a member of Mardorf United Methodist Church, Altoona.
He was a 1969 graduate of Altoona Area High School.
David was a U.S. Army veteran, serving 16 months in Vietnam and attaining the rank of Specialist 4.
He retired as a maintenance supervisor from James E. VanZandt Medical Center following 29 years’ service. He had previously been employed by Conrail for nine years.
David was a member of the Blair County Antique Car Club. He enjoyed attending car shows, hunting, fishing, carpentry, bowling and installing carpet.
He was a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Altoona.
Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in memory of David please be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
