Julie Frances Unger

Julie Frances Unger of Columbia, MD passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 31, 2022 due to complications of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD). Julie was born in Altoona, PA on September 16, 1953, the daughter of Maurice and Dorothy “Genie” Unger and the youngest of 4 siblings. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Jon “Nick” Unger.

Julie was a graduate of Altoona Area High School, Penn State University, and Cleveland State University where she received her master's degree in counseling psychology. She was a licensed mental health counselor for many years in Maryland, Florida, and most recently in Littleton, Colorado where she owned her own practice, Caring Counseling.
Julie was a member of Congregation Oseh Shalom in Laurel, MD where she enjoyed Shabbat and holiday services with her daughter and grandchildren. In Littleton she was a member of Congregation B’Nai Chaim where she served on the board of directors and the rabbi selection committee.

Julie loved the theater, ballet, museums, concerts, and political activism. She and her husband were avid bicyclists, hikers and sightseers and particularly enjoyed exploring Colorado during the 15 years they lived in Littleton. Julie is survived by her husband Lawrence Hanagan, her sisters Nancy Resnick and Milanie Hatfield, her children Sarah (Billy) Biederman, Nathan (Libby) Kershner, stepchildren Sean (Kelly) Hanagan, Matthew (Colleen) Hanagan, and grandchildren Natalie, Cassia and Jenna Biederman; Bryce, Ezra and Sage Kershner; Liam Hanagan; Connor and Maisie Hanagan.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Kenwood Care Homes, Gilchrist Hospice, Howard County General Hospital and the Frontotemporal Dementia Clinic of Johns Hopkins Hospital for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Julie’s honor to the following organizations: Johns Hopkins Psychiatry and Behavioral Services (please direct donations to the Frontotemporal and Young Onset Dementias Clinic) and Planned Parenthood.
