Thomas Alson Blakeney III

Aug. 16, 1963 - Jan. 20, 2010

Thomas Alson Blakeney III, 46, of Houston, Texas, beloved son, brother, uncle, and loyal friend, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010. He was born August 16, 1963 to Thomas A. Blakeney, Jr. and Ann (Moore) Blakeney in Texas City, Texas.

Tom grew up in Alvin, Texas and was active in the Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. One of his proudest moments came when he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. From the moment he could talk, Tom had always wanted to attend Texas A&M, and he was able to fulfill that dream by graduating as an Aggie. Tom loved the outdoors, especially salt and freshwater fishing, boating, and studying the skies with his telescopes. In addition to astronomy, Tom also studied the weather, and he was always willing to answer any questions you might have about it. He was an avid reader and loved all kinds of music. Tom also spent many happy hours driving his sports car and following NASCAR races.

Tom was proud to work in the Chemistry Department at Rice University for the past 19 years. He joined the MOB (Rice Owl Band) over 15 years ago, and he greatly enjoyed participating in all the band’s activities. The many friends he made at Rice over the years became a true family to him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Alson Blakeney, Jr.

He leaves behind his beloved mother, Ann Blakeney; sister, Beverly Blakeney DeJarnett and husband Jeff DeJarnett; nieces, Claire and Paige DeJarnett; cousins and aunts; best friend, Ken Bauer and wife Cathy; and numerous other wonderful friends.

The Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at South Park Baptist Church, 1718 S. Johnson St., Alvin, TT 77511 with Rev. Brent Weldon officiating.

The world has lost a wonderful, generous person who was always ready to share a laugh and create a smile with his terrific sense of humor. He will be sorely missed. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Ken and Cathy Bauer, Tom’s Rice University family, and the professional and compassionate staff at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in the Medical Center.
