In Memory

Daniel Malacara

Daniel Malacara Jr., a 17-year-old senior, died November 30, 1988.  Daniel was Student Council Vice President and a member of National Honor Society and Akademia.  He was in the National Foundation of Sunshine Kids of Houston and in Big Sky Kids of Big Sky, Montana.  He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Services were December 3 at Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel.  Survivors included his parents, Daniel Malacara Sr. and Teresa Malacara, a sister, Tammy Malacara of Amarillo; his grandparents, D.M. Malacara of Amarillo; and Tomas and Tereza Escamilla of Panhandle; five aunts and ten uncles.

Although Daniel passed away prior to graduation,  he had worked hard enough to earn the credits needed to graduate.  While he battled with cancer most of his life, he always had a smile on his face and a song in his heart.  He always knew the Lord had a purpose for his life, and those who knew him well could see His love in him.  Daniel loved his fellow Caprock classmates, and when his sister, Tammy, accepted his diploma at graduation, everyone knew in their hearts that Daniel was smiling from heaven.

Daniel was my cousin and such an inspiration to all of our family. When our family moved to Amarillo, we could have gone to any school we wanted, and we chose Caprock because of Daniel. When he spoke of his school, it was always with fondess and so much love; we couldn't help but want to be a part of that. We miss him so much but know that he is in a far better place than any of us. I can't ever think of Caprock without thinking of him; he was a great young man and I was honored not only to be his cousin, but his friend.

Daniel and I met when we were about 10...we were both studying at the public library. We could talk about anything...church, friends, school, you name it! In high school, Daniel was my science buddy. I think he's the only person I knew that memorized the chemistry chart. I could always count on him to make me smile or help me with a science problem. He had a great sense of humor and he laughed at all of my dumb jokes. He will always have a special place in my heart...I will always remember his laugh and warm smile. He was a good friend!

I'm trying to write down how I felt about my friend Daniel while wiping my tears. I think of him ever so often, and it puts a smile on my face. He was a very dear friend to me. Studying for tests, talking on the phone, lots of fond memories. I'll see you again someday. (There's no tests in heaven, right Daniel? )
