Ricky Lee Grimes, 43, died Monday, April 21, 2014.

Memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Ricky was born Oct. 8, 1970, in Amarillo to Johnny and Tammy Grimes. Ricky passed away after a short battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

He graduated from Caprock High School in 1989 with advanced honors. He went on to attend Amarillo College Police Academy and Amarillo Police Academy, where he was valedictorian.

He started his career in law enforcement on his birthday, and worked for American Quarter Horse Association, Amarillo Police Department, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and Perryton Police Department, serving more than 12 years. He loved horses, fishing, golfing and country and western dancing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Grimes and his maternal grandparents, Art and Dorothy Siemantel.

Survivors include his wife, Courtney Grimes; a son, Jacob Grimes of Booker; three stepchildren, Kyson Braddock, Hailey Mazura and Clayton Mazura; his mother and stepfather, Tammy and Gary Fortin of Amarillo; a sister, Teresa Grimes of Amarillo; an aunt, Toni Christian and husband Danny; his special band of brothers, Linda Calkins, Collin Jordan, Chris Stover, Byron and Tonja Helton; and numerous cousins and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses at Northwest Texas Hospital CCU unit, especially Amanda and Leona, for their loving care of Ricky and his family and friends.

The family suggests memorials be to ALS Association Development Department, 1275 N.W. K St., Suite 250, Washington, DC 20005.
