Rest in peace, Joel.  You were a good man and a good friend.

I remember a poignant epsidode that Joel had at Sam Houston Jr. High School.  He was pretty tall and lanky and pretty strong and something happened between him and Jerry Boggs that led to an after school appointment in the alley on 6th St,  by DINOS  the exquisite eatery where the local urchins congregated to imbibe on Frito Pies, cherry cokes , etc. and to view some scrapes and jawings of both wanna be and real bad asses.Well Joel and Jerry met and the sh-- was on and Jerry was the victor but Joel always was proud of the fact that he made the attempt.

When I was at the 40th reunion in Amarillo in 2010 , I told Joel that Jerry had died and reminded him of the fight, He looked at me and said .  I wadn't skeer'd then and I'm even less skeer'd now since you told me that.

We laughed , and he retold his recall of how that went down , I noticed his perception of defeat , compared those of us who were there was a little more in his favor but none the less he did admit it took him several days to recover and he was convinced he did not want a rematch.

I hope he had a good life here , and hope he knew how to get to his next designation. I think he did.

Dave
