I remember Sam at Crockett Jr. High. He would come over to the the apartments where I lived and we would jump in the pool and hang out. He was very smart and handsome. His memory will always be in my heart.

Sam's was the first funeral I ever attended. It was traumatic for me... I remember it clearly, even what I wore!! I remember thinking: "If Sam could die, then ALL of us were vulnerable......." It was a wake up call: Life is fragile.

Sam was a friend and we attended church together. Like Vicki, I was shaken by his death and funeral. I remember missing him for a long time.

Sam and I were good friends - he and I and Jane were all in the same math class that supposedly was for smart kids and believe me - he was super smart. He was one of those guys who had plenty of confidence too without being annoying about it or making you jealous. I suppose he could have been anything he wanted to be. I still miss him and think about him from time to time. I remember the day I heard that he had died - we were out on the football field at Davy Crockett Jr. High and the band director named Morris told us and then Morris rushed away crying. The sky was very blue and the big sky clouds were still and very white against that sky. It seemed like time stood still which - I guess it did - since I can still see that moment just like it was yesterday when I think about Sam. May he rest in peace and be happy knowing that he is still thought about fondly more than 40 years after his departure from this Earth. I suppose in that way of thinking, like everyone else that we take care to remember, he still lives among us.

I remember Sam fondly. I also remember how smart he was. What I don't remember, Scott, is that there was a math class only for smart kids. I guess that in itself might suggest as to why I didn't know about it. I don't remember anyone of my friends dying before Sam did. It was such a sense of loss. I was one of the only guys in Crockett with my driver's license and a car and I remember we had about 15 guys in my car going to the funeral. We sat right behind his family. Sam was a good guy and he could have been anything he wanted to be. Sometimes things happen and we can't see the reason. The short life of Sam is one of them.
