I adored Coach Ross. I was won of the weaker runners on the cross country team, but he kept me on and I was able to go to the EMAC tournaments because I tried really hard in practice, rarely if ever walked, and didn't give up. The fact that he recognized that meant a lot to me, and showed that for him it wasn't all about winning, but the effort we individually and collectively put in. Now, he could be sadistic in gym class and on those hills some days...so maybe there were times I didn't like him too much, for a couple of hours! But after every workout, we certainly felt like we'd given it our all! :) May he rest in peace.
I also learned the term "fartlik" from him for some kind of interval training he used to put us through. God, that's not something I really chose to remember... :-)
