In Memory

Dean Gillies* - Class Of 1979

Dean died from heart failure. His wife tried desperately to save his life. He was at home when he passed away. Dean loved the class reunions and was looking so forward to the 40 class reunion. He is and will be missed greatly,

I clicked on this not knowing what I would find but knowing that something about Dean’s name pulled in me to do so.

Here is what I would like to say...

I can honestly say that even though I did not know Dean well, in the sense that we hung out together, I Remember Dean well.

As I think back, Dean was someone that refused to be defined by a single clique, he seemed to me to be open to anyone and always had a smile underneath whatever exterior he was wearing at the moment. I remember too that when he smiles it was one of thosnsmiles that always reached his eyes (kind of weird to remember that but I do).

Like many of use he went through tough times that seemed to define our generation and the kept going; a strength at such a young age.

To those who knew him well and especially to his family, I am sorry for your loss. I remember him well.

I loved your story Jon. I loved it so much that it prompted me to say a few things. Dean (Dean'o) was the big brother I never had. We had so many classes together with 2 in paticular, Beven's Rock Class and The Pontoon. Yes There really was a class named The Pontoon. Teachers Wienfauf, Hust and Lucidi. We went on a field trip to the men's prison. Why I'll never know. Maybe an early version of scared straight? Dean along with Frantz Denis were my hero's that day. On the way home on the bus I saw my dad below us at the signal on Imperial and Santa Ana Cayon. The entire class was hanging out of windows and acting crazy. He didn't bother to pick me up in the school parking lot. He went straight home. My favorite was Beven's Rock class.  Dean and Beven sang me the Oscar Mayer Wienne song every day. He called my wienne the rest of our lives We had some pretty memorable times together. Then at our 20 year reunion we talked about our lives, school and all the funny stories shared together. He said "don't let anything happen to you, because I can't wait to see you at the 40". Dean was really special me. And I am so sorry that he won't  be at the 40.  Dean You are so loved and missed. Wish you were here. Myers 2019
