I have fond memories of Karen coming out to our farm with us after school a few times. She did not particularily care for climbing to the top of the side of our old red barn, and I thought it was great fun to slide down it. So, when she came along for whatever reason, we sat at the dining room table and worked on homework. I thought it was so much fun to have her along. When I was growing up, she often came to our house on Sunday afternoons. My family would see her coming around the corner, and say, "Joanie, Karen's here." I never really knew why she came. I can't remember much about what we did, or talked about, or anything. I just knew I was responsible for entertaining her. We ususally had just finished our Sunday meal, so I'm guessing I/we offered her lunch if she wanted some, or pie if we had desert. She usually stayed until supper time and then left. So if my memory serves me correctly, She would arrive around 1 and leave around 4. i do remember one day after school she asked my mom for help with infinitives, gerunds, and participles from our grammar book. My other favorite memory of Karen is that she loved to read. She would order a box of book from the State Public Library all summer long. She could finish off a box in about one week. Back then there was no internet, and we had no library to speak of. Harvey had a public library, which I visited a few times. I don't know if she did that during the school year, but I know she devoured books on all types of subjects all summer long.I also remember that I thought she had the most beautiful middle name that anyone could have. Her middle name was June. I got to go to one of her birthday parties in grade school, and it was the highlight of the summer for me.She was very important to me because she understood so many things so easily and if coaxed she would explain them.
