Laurie I. Ashby

Death: Dec. 5, 2011 Alaska, USA

Lifelong Alaskan, Laurie I. Ashby, 60, passed away at home on December 5, 2011. Services will be held on December 19, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 8110 Jewel Lake Road, Anchorage, Alaska. Fr. Joseph J. Dowling will officiate. Reception following at St. Benedict's Hall.

Laurie was born on July 31st, 1951, in Copper Center, AK to George I. and Katherine E. Ashby. She was born in a small log cabin next to the Copper Center Lodge. She graduated Valedictorian from Copper Valley School in 1968. Laurie attended University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and University of Hawaii. She earned a BA degree in Education and became a certified elementary school teacher.

During the early 1970's, Laurie worked as both a flag person and a surveyor for the State of Alaska, DOT. In 1977 she began a long career in land surveying with Ocean Technologies. She became a registered land surveyor in 1991. Laurie was a survey supervisor for the Northern District of the Alyeska Pipeline at Pump Station Four.

In 2005, Laurie started ALH Surveying with Dave Lowry, and Marty Hodson. At the time of her death she was sole proprietor. Laurie also owned Lotus Moon Imports, which reflected her interest and dedication to Buddha and peace. She operated her business at the Downtown Saturday Market.

Laurie enjoyed serving as a judge for the Academic Decathlon. She was called," Aunt Laurie," by little children far and wide,She was loving and generous and lived her life with integrity. Laurie loved cooking and entertaining for family and friends. Hawaii was her second home. She will be missed beyond measure.

Laurie is survived by her sister, Judith Armstrong (Jack); brother, Randall Ashby,(Lisa); nephews, Mark, Tom, Peter and James Huddleston, and Christopher Armstrong;nieces, Mary Katherine Forrest, Heather Armstrong, Siobhan Schubert, Shauna Talburt, and Carly and Christina Ashby. She is also survived by many great nieces,nephews, cousins, and many friends. Laurie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jean Huddleston. Her ashes will be scattered in Hawaii at a later date.
