Very sad to hear of Doug's passing.
My Dad was inurned in the Columbarium at Arlington 8 years ago (US Navy WWII, Pacific Theater). I will never forget a single moment of the ceremony.  Doug's ceremony will be such an honor to him and the immeasurable gift of service he gave to our great country.

Thank you for your service, Doug.  RIP at Arlington.

His funeral Mass service will begin at 10:45 AM, Wednesday, August 17, at Fort Myer Chapel at Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall (JBM-HH) followed by procession and interment with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. There will be a reception afterwards for family, friends and classmates to honor Doug.

Yesterday, classmates gathered to honor Doug Kingdom's service to our country and bid him farewell at Arlington National Cemetery. Mike Gassmann, Peggy Pickering, Liz Spivey, Rita Smith, Kathy Arrington and Clint McKinney attended Doug's funeral Mass and interment at graveside with military honors. It was a moving experience and tribute to our classmate, Doug.

Hi everyone!  Writing you from Naples, Florida. We are fine, no damage to our house, but just a few miles north of us is total devastation!  This storm is the worst on record for the sunshine state!  As this storm headed for the Carolinas, my prayers are with all you in that area.  Stay safe!

Hi,all from Florida.
Haven't been able to see my place yet but was told that I need a new garage door and some siding.
My folks, Jim(93) and Ruth (92) are at my sister Maureen's. I'm heading there tomorrow to stay with them and take M&D back to their place when they get the all clear. My brother Kevin's place is 'liveable' even though no power or water. Our adjacent neighborhoods look like Mother Nature had a real tantrum.
There's work to do, but we have a great community of people who aren't afraid of hard work.
Hope everyone else is fairing even better than I am.
Thanks again for your calls, Joyce and Ellen.

Hey everyone, I live in Bonita Springs, Florida and we are doing fine.  Never lost power, just tv and internet which is now back on.  We went to a friends house nearby who has great hurricane protection and a whole house generator but their power never went off either.  Our condo did well, just a ripped screen door on the porch.  Bonita Springs is between Ft. Myers and Naples which are destroyed in certain areas.  I must say it was pretty scary at times, my first hurricane since moving here 2 years ago and don't need to do that again.

I am grateful and humbled to have done so well, I know so many others have not, even some of you.  I wish you the best in getting your lives back to normal.  God Bless.  LAURA

Maureen Hamilton Hackert kindly asked via email if anyone affected by Hurricane Ian which hit Florida last week would post a message on the Message Forum.  That is very kind to reach out to us Floridians.  My husband and I are ok.  We did not have water intrusion into our home nor damage to our home.  We had alot of clean up in our yard.  We live in New Smyrna Beach on the east coast of Florida.  Many family, friends, and community lost their homes to flooding.  My heart breaks for the devastation that our community and Florida are experiencing.  It will take months, even years, to rebuild.  I am thanking God for His blessings everyday.  Out of this tradgedy I see loving kindness, helpfulness, selfless service, and unity.  I pray our other classmates who live in Florida are ok.

Most sincerely,

Margot Kosmas May

Bonnie Hobson (Fowler)

Hello Classmates from Bonnie Fowler in Punta Gorda, Florida. We got a direct hit from Hurricane Ian. Our little community looks like a war zone. There are lots of people with lots of needs. My husband and I had a lot of property damage with trees downed, roof tiles missing, and pool cage screens blown out. But, we did not have home damage otherwise. This is not the case for so many residents here, however. Since we live on a waterfront canal of Charlotte Harbor, our worst fear was the predicted 12-18 feet storm surge which never happened.  Had we had the storm surge, most of Punta Gorda would have been under water. As I've told neighbors and friends, the God who held back the Red Sea, held back the waters of Charlotte Harbor that night. Just miraculous!

We have a lot of help pouring in for the area...FEMA, federal & state emergency aid, Samaritan's Purse, Red Cross, etc. I pray that FEMA has a huge supply of FEMA trailers for people who have lost their homes because they are desperately needed not only here in Charlotte County but in Lee County, especially parts of Fort Myers.

Bonnie, good your home was not destroyed. Many pool cages ruined here in Southern Lee County. Our condo held up well. My friends here and I have been doing laundry for a week for linemen and utility workers from here as well as Canada, Indiana,Ohio,Alabama,SC. They are working tirelessly 24/7 and sleeping in sleeping bags wherever. I feel lucky in many ways, Florida is really a mess.

Hi Bonnie.  I am in north Naples and miraculously avoided any damage to our home, but not too far north and south, people were not so lucky.  Glad to hear you are ok, things can be replaced!  And Laura, glad you are good too.  It really was a devastating storm, one I do not want to live thru again!  Hugs to all the ATOMS in the sunshines state!!

Cynthia Taylor (Zook)

Dear Classmates,

I was more than excited to attend our 51st HS reunion this past June … I had been unable to attend any reunions since our 20th due to schedule conflicts, I had lost Mike, my husband of almost 44 years 5.5 years earlier, and we were all coming out of COVID lockdown.  I couldn’t wait to reconnect with all of you!

Knowing my circumstances, Friday night several people joked about the magic of AHS love connections and predicted I could be this year’s success story. I laughed … choosing instead to enjoy every conversation over the three days as a “love connection” in the spirit of friendship. I left Sunday very grateful for the tremendous time I had with our classmates … thanks in large part to the fabulous events and heavy lifting by our extraordinary Reunion Committee.

A few weeks later things changed … a few very brief encounters – totaling about 10 minutes over three days during our reunion – sparked my crazy love story … please allow me to share it with you.

At the meet-and-greet on the first night of the reunion, Bill Bowen and I had a three-minute conversation, during which he told me he had a crush on me in 10th grade English class (I never knew).  Bill says he reverted to being “high school Bill” at the reunion and was too intimated to say more than a few words to me.  After that very brief conversation Friday night, we did not speak again until “closing time” on Saturday night, when Bill came over to say goodbye and that he was returning to California in the morning.  I said, “Bill, we should have one dance.”  Bill quickly took my hand and twirled me out onto the dance floor for what turned out to be the last dance of the night, and we talked briefly while dancing.  The next morning as he was leaving, he stopped by my table at breakfast to say goodbye, and I told him I'd friend him on Facebook.  That was the full extent of our interaction at the reunion.

A week after the reunion, Bill sent me a two-sentence, heartfelt “thanks for the dance” text. I mentioned all this to my daughter a couple weeks later. Knowing I had work in California upcoming in a few months, she said, "Mom, you should text that Bill guy and meet up with him for lunch or dinner.” Later that day, I reached out to Bill, and he promptly responded that he wanted to connect.

What followed was a maelstrom of texting and zoom calls over the next month … many would say we were acting like two high school kids! Bill decided late September was too long to wait to see each other in person, so he flew out to see me in early August.  We both agreed the chemistry and in-person time was even more magical … clearly, we were smitten!

Now we have week-long visits every other week when he flies out to VA or when I fly to CA for work.  And we are talking about the future.  We look forward to turning 70 next year and continuing our love story … all sparked by the AHS Reunion!

Bill and I thank all the members of the Reunion Committee for creating the time, place, and magic for this love story to emerge … we are both grateful and happy!

Which leads to why I am writing you on the website … last night, I danced the night away to the sounds of Tony Bardo (AHS Class of ’70) and his band, the Dialtones, at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA with classmates Fran O’Dea Schwind, Fred Chandler, Maureen Hamilton, David Anderson, Maryalice Conmy, and Rebecca Berry. Maureen reminded me to post our news on the AHS class website.

I am also adding some pictures to my profile from last weekiend in Charlottesville where Bill and I enjoyed our old stomping grounds at UVA before celebrating a friend's wedding. I think these pictures will give you a flavor of the fun Bill and I are having together!

Go Atoms!
