Of Buddy Coburn and "Name Forgone" (unless she wants to confess).

It was in the 5th grade at Hager Elementary and "Name Forgone" was the very first girl to have a training bra. This was a very big deal at the time, and news got around pretty fast. At the time, she was going steady with Buddy. A group of us went to the movies one Saturday afternoon. After that Buddy was THE MAN, because he was the first one to get to second base (as if it even really existed).

No wonder he is so taken with Susan's Profile Picture.

I'll jump in ...

I can remember meeting Mark Mason in early, early grade school. Our parents had us enrolled in swimming lessons during one summer at the P. G. Blazer pool. I think we were called tadpoles. We hung to the side of the pool and it was the beginning of a special friendship.

Another more painful memory was in 6th grade at Hager during gym class. We were playing dodge ball. I was on one side and Mark was on the other. I forget what made him mad at something I had done, but I remember Mark coming after me and kicking me dead square in the jewels....OUCH! I doubled over in pain and Mark took the wrath of Mr Riley. Later that day he was at my side being the best friend anyone had ever had...

We stayed at each others house on most weekends as we grew up and many, many times we would sneak out and run the neighborhoods.

I'll add one more....one of the times we were spending the night with each other...this time we were at his house camping out in the back yard. One thing lead to another and we began playing a dare game. Mark took a dare and it was to streak across the neighboring yards. Now for the really funny part. Half way across the yard his mother just happen to open the back door. "Mark what are you doing?" I'll never forget his expression!!!

Walking home on Lexington avenue from the first day at first grade (Crabbe Elementary) and coming across a fellow first grader who was sobbing because she was lost. She became my best friend and we spent every waking moment together all through grade school. Remember that, Eleanor?

LIfe guarding at Southside. Teaching swimming lessons early in the morning before the pool opened. Freezing to death and trying to keep the spastic kids from drowning.Trying to see who could have the most kids under their chair in time out. Still have my whistle. Ok, who wants to confess to hanging out at Dirks by the river. Tex and Stoner going to Rockys with me snowmobiling all night. Julie Savage running into the creek, thought I would never thaw her out. Going to Maddogs and bombing cars going down Oakview. All the volleyball games with Maddog, Stoner and Tex enhanced with a little 18.875".
Oh yes. What about Connors and his dog scaring the crap out of anyone who opened the wrong door.

Teresa Manley : I was sitting in some Home class, I cannot remember what it was called, but we took it at Coles. I was sitting with Laura Barker, and Teresa look over at us and said she was going to kick my ass because I was with Barker. We have been friends every since.

Becky Mann: Condit Grade School. We walked to her house everyday at lunch and her mother would fix bean and bacon soup. I also remember the coldest milk out of a glass jug.

Crammed in the back of Wilsons bug on the way to a game or rally passing around the worst blended whiskey I had ever tasted. We all managed to get it down. Funny how buzz meant so much more than taste then. (Sue wasn't drinking since she was driving. "cough cough")

I still have a picture of a group of Mrs. Pelfrey's kindergartener's hanging on my wall. I can't name everyone in our class who is in it (although my mother very kindly wrote all the names on the back so I can take it out and look) but there are quite a few. I remember meeting Jenny Sanford and Ann Evans there in particular but being friends with Leigh Ann Wheeler and Mary Lou Douglas too. Let's see off the top of my head... Brian Busch, Mike Duley, David Cannoy, Lee Ann Hall, Dianne Denton, Bill Henderson, Sheila Arrington....and I'm sure some I don't recognize now.

How about something by Todd Rundgren?

Yes, Rundgren's 'Can We Still Be Friends'
Sweet memories Jenny. Does anyone know where Jenny Sanford is now? We were good friends in HS but lost touch after graduation. Her sister Kim teaches at Oakview.

My earliest memories are first grade, playing in Becky Mann's back yard when she lived on Long St. She had a good climbing tree. There were marks on one of the branches that we played like were a typewriter - how funny to think about it now. Then the Mann's moved to Hackworth & she changed from Hatcher to Condit and I lost my first best friend. After that Leslie Davis and I played together in the old Pollard neighborhood until Leslie's family moved to Crabbe district and I lost my second best friend. Does anyone remember twins Debbie & Judy McGranahan, and Kim Daniels? They were also grade school buddies. Then Laura Barker & Jill Arnett moved to the area & started going to Hatcher around 5th grade, two great gals & great friends! I think Dorothy may have been one of the few that went all the way through our grade school. We were the kickball queens of recess! Ahh, good times Smile

I grew up on 31st and Carter ave. some of our classmates that lived there. Clyde Ramey, Lynn Russell,Joanna Fugeman lived on 32nd.(don't remember what grade when she moved there),Sue Moore lived a few blocks down also.
We all went to Wylie Elementary.
I had a big crush on Clyde and Teresa Manely started going there and he started talking about her.
Some others I remember from Wylie are Laura Barker,Greg Sutphin, Angela and Connie Hensley(Connie is Angela's Aunt),Aaron Blake, Cynthia Farrow,Kerry Thomas.
Clyde's family and Greg's family was friends with my family.
Greg Sutphin and Kerry Thomas Moms and My Mom was in the P.T.A.
I remember the time that Greg and his family stayed at our house and we got up early on morning and walked one block over to see the train go by that had President Dwight Eisenhower's Casket on it. Greg do you remember that?

Jenny Sanford (Williams) married Risky Williams (class of '80) and they live in Patrick Co, VA, close to Ferum. Their oldest girl (Sarah) is in college and they still have two at home.

Teresa Manley, I saw you had responded. My earliest memory of you was one day after school at Coles. My Mom was a teacher at Coles when we attended. Anyway, we were driving home and we noticed on a side street you were beating the crap out of Terry Stewart. Mom, of course, stopped and broke the fight up. From that day forward, I knew not to mess with you.

Now, Nick . . . you know I've always been a peaceable kind of gal . . . and if memory serves me right, it was Greg Conner . . . he sat behind me in Mr Johnson's class and got in my purse one day and took out an "unmentionable" and started waving it around the class. So, you see, I really didn't get mad at Greg, I was just trying to teach him a little about PMS for his later use in life! I'm sure his wife appreciates it to this day! Wink

Okay Teresa, I will take you at your word. Besides, I've survived these 47 years by understanding when and where (meaning never) to disagree with "peacable gals". Laughing

It is pretty funny to hear the background though.

Then hung out Jenny Sanford, Jenny Harrison was up the street but you had to cross Sherwood drive and were were too young then to cross. When we got older the Nottingham kids played in Box Cannon and Flattop Mtn.
I remember the McGranhan girls didn't one have a baby in Jr High??? I think I was in their class.
Poor old Sr Creech he didn't stand a chance with Sammy!! Evil or Very Mad I had Sr Cheech for History two years, no wonder I had such a had time taking History in High School!!

Donna Thompson- My earliest memory of you is (I think)at a Birthday party for you at your house. I have no idea how old we were but we moved to that neighborhood when I was 3 and I think we were probably 5. I also remember your brothers and my brothers and Rick Kouns and Tony Campbell all getting together in our side yard to play football. I was always left out or told to be a cheerleader.

How about something by Todd Rundgren?

Jenny, Oh the days of being left out on the sidelines when we were little chicks. They did let me play ghost in the grave yard and tag. I remember your brother having those rabbits in the little cabin down the hill from your house. Everytime we went down there it seemed that they doubled each time.... those prolific rabbits...

My earliest memory of friends is when I moved to the street where I still live and met Luanne Hunt, and Talmadge Fannin when I was 5 years old. Cindy Moore lived behind me and I could "walk through the woods" and get to her house within 2 minutes. What good times we had growing up on 2nd Circle and going to Crabbe Elementary.

I can remember being best friends with Anna Stewart when I went to Condit and going to a birthday party for Julie Savage and winning the hula hoop contest. Unfortunately, I left my prize and it traumatized me for years!

When I went to Poage, Muff and I were inseparable. We would have sleepovers, we played jacks for hours. Her favorite song was "Dancing in the Moonlight". (Sorry, Muff, I think I still have the tape where I recorded you singing it!) Mine was "Last Song".Wink

Then Putnam found us a new best friend in Teri Glockner. I'm so glad she and Muff have remained so close.
