Josie and I knew each other practically from the time we were born. Our families knew each other and we would often get together for "play dates" as children. I was in her class for the second half of 5th grade at Wylie Elementary after we moved back to Ashland from Virginia and she was the first classmate to befriend me and make me feel welcomed. In high school Josie and I always shared the common trait of having black hair that was already starting to turn gray. I also remember seeing Josie behind the jewelry counter at Penney's in the mall and she would always go out of her way to say hello to me as I passed through the store. She is missed and spoken of so highly everytime we get together as a class and we miss her so much!
Josie had the best slumber parties!! I remember going to them at her house on Hilton Ave. I can remember playing truth or dare.....she was always the daring one!!! Just about any Steely Dan song reminds of her! Especially FM. Not sure why, guess they must have been playing at those slumber parties!! She was always sweet and kind and I thought she was one of the prettiest girls in our class! Glad I have good memories of her!!!
I always had good memories of Josie. One event that I clearly remember was at Coles Jr. High. "Lisa and Josie" were running for president/vice-president of student council. Sheree Kezer dressed up as a banana. Some of you may remember the tune she sang....."I'm a chiquita banana and I am here to say, Lisa and Josie are the only way....they are the top banana!!" Funny, how I can remember that tune after 34 years!!
I didn't post anything about losing Josie because I didn't have anything comforting to say I suppose. The news shocked me and my mother could hardly bring herself to relate it. Spending time with her preparing for the campaign Brad mentions was the most concentrated amount of time I had together with her. She was the organizer. I believe she asked me initially if I would like to give it a go. I am happy she did in retrospect. Because of this we were able to talk for hours while cutting out little slogans for campaign buttons. I learned about her thoughts concerning her father, and about many family things I had never known before. The scene in her living room is frozen in my mind like it happened an hour ago. I remember joy. A beautiful smile. Laughter. Sincere friendship and kindness. I recall thinking that her mother was a lovely lady as well, and wondered if Josie wouldn't look like her one day. Odd that you can forget an entire day from three or four weeks ago, and yet remember something so crisply from 33 years ago. I like thinking of this time as well, because it reminds me of Linda Adkins. If she was near me I recall I was laughing and happy every second. What is it about all of these Hilton Avenue Prospect area people? Top-notch.
