Joel passed away on July 11, 1993 in an automobile accident at the age of 22.
I found this note that Joel wrote to me in 6th or 7th grade. This is so Joel - always making me laugh and always so sweet. I think about him often and remember vividly where I was when Jen called me to tell me about his passing. It was the worst call I've ever received.

I think about Joel often, and remember how friendly and kind he was in high school. Joel, David Wardrop, and my Grandfather, Howard Skinner Sr. are all buried in close proximity to each other in the Athens cemetary. Whenever I can make a trip to see my parents, I visit my Grandfather's grave and visit Dave and Joel's grave also. In doing so, I can only take comfort in that God must of had important work for them both to do in heaven, to have their lives end so young.Darin Yale
Amen Beth. Joel and I had a blast in track our senior year. We had no pole vaulters in our school, so Joel & I decided what the hell. With little coaching & lots of practice, we both made about 9.5 ft. In the end, we decided to leave pole vaulting to the professionals.
