Bill Moore

Bill Moore

Bill Moore was a big man in frosh-soph and varsity Football at M-A and he helped our Seniors lose to the teachers in our Senior-Faculty Basketball game. He served on our Sophomore Board and the Student Council. Bill and his wife Kris outfitted their own sailboat and loved to sail on the San Francisco Bay and on trips to Europe. They were proud of their children Andrew, Zackary, Leslie and six grandchildren.

William Edwin "Bill" Moore, a former mayor, planning commissioner and city council member of Belmont, died Oct. 5, 2015, in Santa Rosa after a brief illness (heart attack). He was 71. Bill was born March 29, 1944, in San Francisco, to Edwin and Margaret "Peggy" Moore. He studied at Parsons College and the University of Idaho before finally earning a business-administration degree from Humboldt State College.

An avid skier, Bill worked as a ski patrol officer in Aspen for a winter, and then moved back to San Francisco where he began a career in container sales, first for Continental Can and then Norton Packaging, where he stayed for 35 years before retiring in 2005. He also was a member and Chairman of the Golden Gate Paint and Coatings Society.

Bill married his wife, Kristine Hollenbeck, in San Francisco in 1970 and they moved to Belmont. In 1980, Bill won a seat on the Belmont City Council, where he served until 1985. He also served as Mayor in 1984 in addition to being chairman of the former South County Fire District. He was also active in Belmont Rotary, and was a volunteer Scoutmaster with Boy Scouts Troop 301.

Bill's interests were many, and his passion for life was boundless. He enjoyed reading history, camping, road trips and taking the path least taken. He was an active whitewater rafter, which led to a pursuit of whitewater kayaking that ended only when he broke his neck on the Rogue River. He made a full recovery, and after his wife sold their kayaks, he started taking sailing lessons, which became his full-time hobby. He and his wife kept their 36-foot Islander Freeport at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor and were active members of the Sausalito Yacht Club with many friends on "A" Dock.

In addition, Bill and Kris frequently sailed the Mediterranean, chartering boats with family and friends and calling on ports in the Adriatic and Ionian Sea, such as Fiscardo, Sivota, Meganisi, Preveza and Corfu. They also sailed among the Sporades, the Cyclades, Hydra and the Turquoise Coast of Turkey in the Aegean Sea, as well as the West Coast of Italy, including Elba and Giglio, and the South Coast of France.

Bill lived a life full of wine and song; he loved to be around people. He never cared what anyone thought of him but cared deeply for others, friends, family and strangers alike.

He is survived by his wife Kristine, of Santa Rosa; his sister Melinda Griffith, of Sequim, Wash.; his brother Robert Moore, of Sparks, Nev.; his son Andrew Moore and wife Erin, grandchildren Jed, Madison and Rowan, of Sugar Land, Texas; his son Zachary Moore, and his partner Michelle Gura, grandchildren Brandon, Alaina, Clark, and Christopher, of Beaumont; and daughter Leslie Rucker, husband Brian, and grandchildren Carson and Jack, of Cedar Park, Texas. A memorial fund has been set up at the Sausalito Yacht Club to benefit the Sausalito Youth Sailing Foundation. (Written by Andrew Moore)

Bob Britts: Bill and Kris loved to sail on the bay and in Europe. Bill always had the biggest and most genuine smile. He was so interested in everyone's story of their lives. I will miss him very much. I hope you will create a remembrance memorial for Bill.

Bob Plate: Bill and I grew up together in the same neighborhood with Kenny Long, Bill Wright, and Bobby Laird. We went to grammar school together and then to M-A. Bill along with so many others was an original Tarquin. I ran into Bill at a 49er game many years ago and that was the last time we had contact – we all have great memories of Bill.

What I remember most about Bill is his good nature and a special sparkle.  I knew him well when we were teens  and young adults - so long ago.  I'm very happy that we had a chance to re-connect at the 50th reunion and to have met Kris. He still had that special sparkle and such a love of life.  The world is a little bit darker now, without Bill in it.

I'm really sorry to hear of Bill's passing but it sounds like he had a wonderful, full life.  He was really blessed in so many ways.  I remember Bill as a good football player and a really, really good guy. He allways had that bright smile and a terrific, positive way about him.

Bill will be missed!  I was so sad to see the In Memory post.  I haven't seen Bill since our 50th MA Reunion.  I do believe he was there.  Otherwise we were co-Moore's in high school and I always liked Bill and enjoyed him. He was part of our MA gang. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.  Sue (Moore) Anderson  class of 62'
