Atlanta Journal-Constitution - February 27, 2004
Evangella Katina Petkas Nastopoulos was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on July 9, 1944, and passed away in her home in Atlanta on February 25, 2004, surrounded by her beloved family. The daughter of the late John and Eleni Bravos Petkas of Peramos, Asia Minor, and Atlanta, Katina grew up in Atlanta where she graduated from Grady High School and attended Georgia State University. A truly devoted wife and mother, she is survived by her husband, George, her daughter, Demetra, and her son, John, who were able to express their own deep devotion to her by the loving care and attention they gave her during her long illness. A lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Clairmont Road, Katina gave many years of service to her parish and community. She was active in the Ladies Philoptochos Society, the charitable arm of the church, serving for several years on its Board, and was well known for the delicious New Year's bread she baked for the annual Philoptochos "Vasilopita" auction every January -a bread recipe she learned from her mother and has passed down to her daughter. She was also a member of the Philoptochos Board of the Metropolis of Atlanta and served as its treasurer. For 10 years, she worked on the steering committee of the church summer camp and also volunteered her time as an advisor to GOYA, the church organization for the youth. She was a hardworking member of the Daughters of Penelope, the women's auxiliary of the national fraternal order of AHEPA -the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. One year she baked hundreds of melomakarona cookies, another of her specialties, for the Daughters' annual bake sale, which helped to make it the most successful bake sale ever. She worked diligently and with great care to see that everything she undertook was handled with near perfection. In 1999, she made a trip to the Holy Land with several members of the Cathedral in a spiritual journey that remained vividly memorable. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her brothers, Nick and Emmanuel Petkas of Atlanta. She is also survived by many relatives both in America and in Greece. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the following charitable organization: The Emory Multiple Myeloma Research Fund, 1440 Clifton Road NE, Suite 116, Atlanta, GA 30322 (404) 727- 0462, www.emorymedicine.com A Prayer Service will be held in the Chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons on Friday evening, February 27, at 7 PM. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 PM -8 PM that evening. Funeral services will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 2500 Clairmont Rd. on Saturday, February 28, at 1 PM with the Rev. George Alexson officiating.
