Claudia remained my friend for over forty years. She was a gifted and amazing person, having wonderful musical and literary talent. Most of all, she brought out the best in everyone she knew.
Thanks to Ann Irwin Williams and her husband, Phil for creating a picture file from the 1964 Orator of Claudia. I have just posted it so that it now shows up on the "In Memory" Section. Those of us who attended Morningside were close to Claudia and I always counted her as one of my best friends.. Claudia had Scarlet Fever as a young child and was kept back a year, so while she was part of our class she was always a couple of steps ahead of us being a more mature person.
In that capacity, she was always a trusted listener and advisor on matters of the heart that were so important to many of us during those early pre-teenage years. The "crushes" that were part of those years were just right up Claudia's alley and she was full of advice. On our Senior Trip to Callaway Gardens, Claudia was my seatmate on the trip home. I had dislocated my left shoulder water skiing behind a Mercury 90 HP OB Boat. I was in extreme pain each time the bus hit a bump in some of the 1960's Georgia highways and Claudia was good company on the tirp back to Atanta. In an effort to take my mind off of the pain, she talked about the 7th Grade Morningside School Parties that she hosted. where a spinning coke bottle in the center of a circle of 12 year old boys and girls who had know each other since we were in Kindergarted or 1st Grade. The Newcomer home was a safe haven for our early romatic dreams of a kiss on the cheek to become an innnocent reality.
Claudia was the happy organizer and leader of these simple adventures. That leadership stayed with her throughout her life as she was a successful business person and volunteer in her community. A truly good friend to many.
