In Memory

John Sperry

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/aurora-beacon-news/obituary.aspx?pid=176277896 I ran across this obituary in the Beacon. I ran into him while on R&R in the Philippines in 1967, I believe, but hadn't seen or heard from him since that time. I sent a previous note before but haven't heard a thing. I don't believe I sent it in the forum. Dave Croyl

John was sharing a room at Jennings Terrace with my Dad. The first couple of times I saw him I didn't know who he was.  I was sitting with them at dinner when I started asking him questions....where are you from? ....what school....finally...what's your last name.  Then I told him...you know, we went to Hight school together..graduated together. Small world.     The evening before he last left for the hospital he was telling me about getting together some of his tools.....in tool boxes that he made...and giving them to his grandsons....he was quite pleased about it. He was also making plans to move to a VA home in Lasalle.   John and my Dad did the same kind of work...both were in the Navy....but they couldn't share....Dad's lost a lot of his words, but he enjoyed listening. Naturally John was bored....not a lot to do for him. One Saturday night there was a Blue Grass band playing at the Sheltered Care side of Jennings so I wheeled him over to listen for a couple of hours. He really enjoyed their music.....it's a group that get's together and practices at Jennings....with other guys...they just jam. Entertaining for all. I would try to get items for John, but I never did get him the tools, for him to mess with his chair....because, he siad....guys just need to fiddle with tools and things.       Peace be with you John.
