Not sure that it is Gary or not, but the classmate I remember who died went by the name Duanne Herring. I don't remember the year that he died, but I believe it was in the late 1990's or early 2000's. The obituary didn't say how he died, but it seemed like it was a sudden death. Duane and I went to our senior prom together, but didn't stay in touch over the years. He attended SMU in Dallas and became a lawyer and a CPA. He was a really sweet guy.
