I'll never forget receiving that call from my Dad, breaking the news of Marty's death, when I was a new college freshman. I got the next bus out of Cortland to come home.Marty and I were childhood friends. He lived around the corner from me. In the summer, we used to go horseback riding on "Major and Molly" and go swimming in the spring pond that his Dad created on their property.

Marty was a wonderful friend from grammar school through high school. He had an infectious laugh and was always there to help anyone in need. Marty was full of fun and was one of the sweetest and most caring individuals I have had the fortune to know during my lifetime. I think of him often, and still miss him.  Georgene Shaw

Goodness....I could never write even a fraction of my thoughts about Marty. He was probably the kind of guy many people thought saw them as "their best friend."  But certainly because he and Buddy Vredenburg and I were active in my Dad's church, First Methodist, I sure felt he and I were best friends.  We spent countless hours together, both at my house, at his house, fishing in his pond, riding Major and Molly, and playing in the snow at our cottage in the Adirondacks on Hinckley Lake, north of Utica.

I, too, remember the call I received in my freshman year at Lycoming College. It was from my Mom.  It was only the second time I had lost a close buddy, (David Wright being the first, if I have it right)  And both to car accidents. What was particularly ironic was the fact that Marty's car slid into the path of a milk truck....his father's company!  My Dad did the funeral, of course, and it was so tough.  I've always wondered what Marty or David might have become if their lives had not bee cut short.....

I think it was our junior year.  We had been friends (as he was with everyone) for years and were working on the Christmas Ball together.  We both lost our dates the day of or the day before the dance and were commiserating over it during Chem., I think.  After the day ended, we were working together decorating the gym with a skating rink made of aluminum foil with manequins of kids and he said "We should go together.  After all this hard work, we should get some fun out of it." And so we went.

It was one of the best times ever!  No pressure, just two good friends having a good time together.  I'll never forget it - or him.  He was one of a kind. We both agreed that we had a better time than we probably would had we gone with out original dates.  So special.
