I remember Joe as a very kind and generous classmate.  He was also bright, curious, creative, had a great sense of humor --- and was quite above the "average Joe."  Joe and I were in the Thespian Society together during our Junior and Senior years at Patterson.  Joe had leading roles in several plays performed at the old and new schools.  He played opposite Pat Skurzynski and Daniel Redyk in the Senior Class Play, "Cheaper by the Dozen."  Joe, Pat and Daniel were outstanding and the auditorium rocked with laughter for two hours!

Like so many of us, he was born and raised in Highlandtown, on Bradford Street.  He later moved to Towson. After graduating from Patterson in 1961, Joe joined the Navy in the Pacific , becoming a "cryptologist", i.e., one who deciphers secret codes, symbols and language.  Shades of Sherlock Holmes  ---  can't imagine Joe doing this!  After his service in the Navy, he returned to Baltimore and worked in computer operations at the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and later at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay.  Joseph Charles Shaney died on June 11th, 2004, at his Towson home.

Joe, I, we, haven't forgotten you, I salute you my friend! --- Merry Christmas from all of us who remember you.

I was fortunate to meet Joe's son, Jeff, a few years ago.  He was working as a social director at a nursing home where my mother-in-law was a resident.  Jeff was the kindest, warmest and most caring individual at that nursing home.  When I recall my interactions with Joe during our high school years, there is no doubt where Jeff got his winning ways.  Joe was a wonderful person.
