Phil Ostrander
Jim O'Brien, WHS Class of 1964, aka Beetle (pre-The Beatles), later known as Batman, was my best friend for about 10 years from Junior High until he married his first wife, Joanne. We spent an inordinate amount of time walking by and later, when I got my driver's license, driving by the homes of the girls I was enamored with at the time. We also were pool life guards together in the summer of 1963 in Ocean City MD. We spent a lot of time attending CYO dances at OLPH and St. Agnes. We also were part of the CYO weightlifting team competing against the Downtown YMCA. Unfortunately, we lost our match with them. On the day that he began basic training with the Army National Guard, he lent me his 1966 Chevy II Nova with a 327 c.u. engine. I promptly took it on a tour of Woodlawn and Catonsville, including CCC. We hung out a lot at Chapman's in Woodlawn and at Burger Chef in Gwynn Oak Junction, where he met Joanne. He passed away too early in his mid-fifties, joining his brothers, Dennis, WHS Class of 1970, and later Patrick, WHS Class of 1967. He left behind 7 children and a lot of good memories.
RIP my BFF,
Phil Ostrander
