Susan and I grew up on the same street since we were 4 years old. We also shared our birthday, Feb. 6, 1947, along with Paul Whittenberger and Michele Reid.. She married Derwood Brooks , taught Math in Howard County High schools and had a daughter named Meredith Lee Brooks.. They lived in Laurel, MD. She died Dec. 5, 2010 of blood cancer. She was our class secretary all 3 years at Woodlawn and graduated in 65.
Sue and I were roommates at Radford College when she met Derwood. I can remember the night she was "pinned" by Derwood and the smile on her face when she shared the news with us in the dorm. She was always on top of her studies while enjoying life at Radford and VPI. She was married and earning her Master's Degree while I was student teaching. I wish we would have kept in touch.
Sue and I re-connected in 2009 via Classmates.com We discovered that we shared much in common as parents and working professionals. I was very sad to learn that she was receiving chemo for cancer, a fact she revealed without any self-pity in a letter to me in the Spring of 2010, the last one I got from her. She sounded resilient and positive about her future and her family's, and I'm sure she was like that to the end.... Rest in Peace, Susan
