The summer before our junior year, all of the guys, " Joel, Damon, Mike, JJ, and me" were hanging out on Joel's patio after "two a days" football practice, before school started. We talked about life and what we saw for ourselves in the future. I don't remember why, but I made some statement to the fact that if one of us close circle of brothers died before my first son was born, I would name him after that one of us.
I never had a clue that I would actually remember that promise, much less keep it. In 2005, Michael Conejo was born. He starts 1st grade this year. He's tall, good looking, athletic, and a smart alec. :) He doesn't know it, but he really honors his name sake.
We all know the story of how we lossed Mike. These days, I prefer to remember the way he lived; the way we all lived, and smile.
