Don Coleman

Don Verlin Coleman September 9, 1946 - January 18, 2009 CORVALLIS - Don Verlin Coleman passed away on January 18, 2009 from complications of pneumonia at Heart of the Valley Nursing Home in Corvallis. Don was born on September 9, 1946 in Portland to Verlin George Coleman and Gwendolyn Madge Hunt. Don attended Sunset High School in Beaverton, then Oregon State, and then obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Cornell. He taught music in Hawaii in his early twenties and then spent most of his adult life in Salem. He loved sports, racquetball, golf, Oregon State sports, and his dog, Babe. He was a great social planner and got friends together for events and golf trips. His life revolved around music and musical events, and he played the piano for many gatherings. Don's life gradually became difficult, with physical and mental problems, and he had a hard time managing his own affairs although he continued to try. Many in Corvallis, Albany, Salem, Portland, and on the Oregon coast tried to help him. The family and his second wife, Sandy Coleman from whom he was divorced, are grateful for these many helping people. During his last illness, Don became interested in spiritual isssues and asked for the Bible to be read to him, for which we are thankful. Special thanks to so many in Corvallis and Albany, including Corvallis Homeless Shelter Coalition, Corvallis Fire and Rescue, Corvallis City Police, Benton County Mental Health, Senior Services, Mario Pastega House, Good Samaritan Hospital including nursing staff, CNA's, Dr. Barry Smith and his hospitalist staff, ER personnel, mental health staff, and Chaplain Francis Potts and the NODA volunteers. Don is survived by his brother, Kenneth H. Coleman of Spokane; nephew, Chad Coleman of Seattle; nieces, Christina (Coleman) Baker of Seattle and Brooke Coleman of Spokane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Verlin and Gwen Coleman; and aunt Carolyn Irving.
