Kay Patricia Ann Usher was the youngest daughter of Mrs. Marie L. Hoare and William T. Usher. Kay left Belize in 1979 after working as an Apprentice Dispenser at the Belize City Hospital. She then obtained an Associate Degree in Science at Miami Dade Community College. Later she was awarded a grant and scholarship to attend the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) to pursue Pharmacy Studies. While at FAMU, she assisted the 1984 Graduating Class of BJSS with its Educational Tour '84 to Miami, Tallahasee, and New Orleans (she still had the thank you note from the Class in her files). While at FAMU, she earned a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1985. She was in the first graduating class to receive an entry level Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. Kay spent the next seven years working as a PharmD., teaching Pharmacy Technician Certification courses, and working with various Nursing Homes treating elderly patients. She then, returned to Belize in 1991 to develop the Pharmacy Program at the University College of Belize (UCB). During her time in Belize, she was actively involved in working with the Government of Belize in protecting the Rainforest during the various visits by American and Latin-American Pharmaceutical companies conducting research in the Belizean rain forests. As a Professor of Pharmacy at UCB, she was intimately involved in the success and career development of her students. In 1997, Kay returned to the United States when she was offered the position of Director of Pharmacy at Princeton Hospital in Orlando, Florida. Prior to her death, she purchased a property in downtown Belize City in order to open a Diabetes Clinic to care and tread the growing population of Belizeans with Diabetes. Her dream was to eventually return to Belize.
On August 16, 2000, Kay died of a pulmonary emboli (blockage of an artery in the lungs by a blood clot).
