Absent Friends

Brenda Owens (Peterson)

Brenda passed away on January 24, 2019, after a long bout with cancer that had spread to her lungs.

In today's world she probably would have been a successful sprinter on the CHS women's track team; however, in our day the sport wasn't open to women.

In later years, Brenda learned to play the piano, sing, and even wrote music. She volunteered as an usher at the Three Stages Event Center in Folsom and made music the focus of her life.

At this time we have no further details.

I remember Brenda as a track star.  She ran hurdles and was pretty amazing, but she was humble about her talent, approaching running as a committed learner, always trying to improve.  She worked so hard at it, she developed shin splints, the first time I'd ever heard of the injury.  We didn't have a girls track team so discovering she was good at this was something of a surprise to her as well as to others.

Thanks for helping us remember our Carlmont friends who have passed.  I only knew Brenda in high school, but she was a bright light.

Brenda was a very dear friend. I can't help but think about when I first got my driver's license and I lived on Tamarack Avenue ... and Brenda lived in San Carlos Estates ... on Hewitt I believe?? Every time I needed to go downtown ... no matter what the errand was ... I would always run up the hill and pick up Brenda so I could look "way more cooler" while driving around San Carlos in my 49 Ford. We spent the night at each others' houses quite a bit all through high school. I loved that Brenda could whistle really loud using her fingers ... so I, of course, I wanted her to teach me. We sat on my front porch one afternoon and I tried for hours to get it ... but just couldn't. However, we woke up during the night and I sat up in bed to try again ... and let out loud an ear-piercing whistle ... WOO HOO!! Brenda was very proud of me ... but my father wasn't quite as thrilled since we woke him up. Brenda's parents also had a yellow Mercury convertible that was the bomb back then. She would pick up a bunch of us girls ... Joan, Sue, Cheryl, Sandy, Mary ... and who am I leaving out (??) ... and we would all pile in the Mercury and go cruising ... so much fun!! These are just a few of the many fun times I had with my friend, Brenda. I miss you ... and you will always be in my heart. Thank you for being my friend all these years, Brenda!! Love, Barb xoxoxoxoxox
