Absent Friends

Ed Sherry

EDWARD M. SHERRY 1944 - 2007

Born December 21, 1944, in San Francisco, Ed, the eldest son of Bette and Edward Sherry, Sr, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2007, after a long illness. Ed grew up in the Potrero Hill district of the City, and retained a love of San Francisco for his entire life. As a young boy, his grandmother would take Ed to see live Broadway shows in SF, and he quickly realized that this was his calling. Thus, a lifelong kinship and great love of the theatre was born and nurtured.

Ed went on to become a professional singer, actor and dancer on the musical comedy stage. Some high points, of which he was very proud, include touring the United States in Camelot starring John Raitt, touring with the Folies Bergere in Mexico and South America, and performing many summers with Music Circus in Sacramento, alongside Broadway stars, many of whom became good friends of his. He also starred in many shows on the Peninsula over the years, at theaters such as Comedia, Palo Alto Community Theater, Civic Light Opera, Theatreworks, West Bay Opera and Standing Room Only.

As a child, Ed developed a talent for ceramics. He started his own company, Sherry's Ceramics, at the age of 16 in his parents' garage in Belmont. He progressed to a storefront in San Carlos, becoming one of the leading ceramics supply and glaze manufacturers in the United States. In September of 1980, he realized a long-time dream when he bought out his competitor, Western Ceramics, in San Francisco, and his company became Sherry's Western Ceramics. He ran the company successfully until his passing.

Ed excelled at everything he tried, show business, ceramics and cooking. He also had a great love of animals of all kinds.

Ed is survived by his mother, Bette, his brother, Michael, five nieces and nephews, his grandmother, Sofia, his dog, Mac, and many, many loving friends all over the world. He will be sorely missed. There will be a celebration of Ed's life on Saturday, September 22, at the Oddfellows Hall, 839 Main Street, Redwood City, at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The American Cancer Society or The Humane Society in Ed's name would be greatly appreciated.

Carolyn Pettit (Winters)

Ed and I were best friends for many years beginning in 1969, when he acted in my "then" husband's musical theatre productions. He saw me through two divorces, and my final marriage in 2003. He and I shared many phone calls after I moved from the Bay area and he was at my house three months before he passed away. I mss him every day.
