From Robert Samis:
Bert was literally a physical presence on campus who no one could miss. He was BIG, probably about 300 pounds, and tall. It seems he wore only sweatsuits even though out the dead of winter. Bert was known as a poet on campus and majored in classic and comparative lit. In the July 20, 1971 Round Table literary supplement page 3 you can find his poen entitled Naomi's Song. Bert noted his interests as encounter groups, body painting, primal therapy, and water skiing. He went on academically to University of California Berkeley and earned a M.A. in Rhetoric. Although a native of St. Louis Bert must of traveled quite a bit since her is credited with giving over 4,000 performances. He was a published poet in over 40 publications and worked in schools across the country as an artist in residence. He became known as a story teller and performance artist and was a self proclaimed monologist and oral historian as well as known for his classical Greek style of poetry. He was a guest artist/performer in series such as at St. John's College in Annapolis, MD in a series that included such illustrious performers and thinkers as the Kronos Quartet, Mortimer Adler, and an Exxon executive speaking about the energy crisis in 1977. Bert left an indelible impression wherever he strode. Maybe he is watching us from across the River Styx, which was also the title of a poetry collection he contributed to.
