In Memory

Ricky Chestnut

Tragically, Ricky's life was cut short the summer of 1987, shortly after 8th Grade Graduation.  Ricky was riding his bike into Bement from Milmine when he was struck by a car on the highway.  Many of Ricky's classmates remember exactly where they were when they received the news.

Ricky will never be forgotten.

Ricky was into martial arts, my locker was close to his and I remember he mentioned a trophy one day. I said sure, show me, expecting a little hand held guy throwing a ninja kick. The trophy was huge, like first or second place, a major tournament, 3 ft at least.
That tragic day, myself and most of the other Ivesdalians went to a farm bridge north of town and considered our own mortality. But most importantly, we remembered him by talking about each of our own interactions. It was a sincere day, remembered by everyone who was there...to this day. I am proud to have known Ricky Chesnut.

Ricky showed up early to Kelly Lamb's Halloween party. His parents were headed into town to bowl on their league- and dropped him off on their way to town. He helped set up for the party (in full costume) and if I remember correctly, he also helped Sandy, Kelly and myself pick up when the others had gone home. I seem to remember many hot summer days when Ricky would come in town and spend most of the day at the pool or at the ball field- he loved baseball. I remember the day I heard that a Bement kid was hit and killed on his bike, mom and I were in Kaiser's department store in Monticello. I can still remember that "punched in the gut feeling"- I bet most of us still have that feeling when we think about losing someone so young with so much more life to live. Keep watching over all of us Rick- you're doing one hell of a job. We'll always miss you.

I was riding into town with Ricky that day, and a little bit of me died that day he did. I can still remember turning and seeing him at the turn off onto 105.....Never been on that road again! I will never forget the support I got from everyone. Rick you will always be missed!

You were a special classmate to us that will ALWAYS be remembered.  I thought about you the other day and what your life would be like right now.  I do know that you were a very caring person and I remember we had a good friendship!  Ricky was walking beans for my Dad that Summer he left us too young.  I also remember one of my parties in my parents big shed and the song Almost Paradise we danced to that.  When I hear that song I think of Ricky :)  Our class was close in the first place, but after the day we lost Ricky, we shared a stonger bond.
