James G. Moffitt 1955 - 2011 BENNINGTON, VT James Gerald Moffitt, 55, a resident of Bennington, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 22, 2011. He was the son of Rita M. Moffitt and the late Gerald M. Moffitt of Bennington and the loving father of Damien Moffitt of New York City. He was born in Bellows Falls, Vt., October 9, 1955. He survived six years of Catholic school while fantasizing about being James Bond or a Hell's Angel and graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School in 1973. He ate drank and slept motorcycles including racing motocross in the U.S. and overseas in the '70s. He served in the Navy as a Seabee from 1975 to 1979. During his lifetime he lived in several locations in the U.S. and in Europe and moved to New York City in 1986. He lived in New York for over 20 years, raising a family and working as an art handler. Music was his sanctuary. He played drums in many bands and recorded on several CDs and vinyl. His band, Missing Foundation, toured in Europe in the early '90s. Jim influenced his son to share his love of playing the drums and performing. Jim's most recent endeavor was his business, Wicked Wicked, where he worked in metal and wood fabrication and tattoo design. ,Jim affected many people's lives with his gregarious and magnetic personality as well as his infectious (yet dry and sarcastic) humor. Those who were close to Jim knew that he loved to provoke people, even shock them, to force them to think out of the box and reconsider what we all think of as the norm. He is survived by his wife, Leslie Gartrell, and son, Damien Moffitt, of New York City; mother, Rita Moffitt of Bennington; sister, Debra desCognets of Lanesboro; brother, Brian Moffitt and his wife, Veronique Cheniaux; niece, Aliza Fegan of Rochester, NY , and nephew, Nick desCognets of Richmond, Va., as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Gerald Moffitt. MEMORIAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the White Chapel, 2972 Chapel Rd in Bennington on Saturday afternoon, June 4 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a memorial celebration at 2 p.m,, so bring a story or memory to share.
