WOODFORD -- Scott O. Smith, 48, a resident of Penny Lane, died suddenly Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at his residence. Born in Bennington March 5, 1956, he was the son of the late Olin Smith and the former Phyllis (Stitt) Smith, who survives. He received his education in the Woodford and Bennington schools and was a 1975 graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School. Scott married the former Catherine “Kitty” Oswald in Woodford on July 3, 1998. At the time of his death Scott owned a landscaping business in Woodford. In earlier years, he had been employed at the former Shea wood products plant in North Bennington and at Johnson Controls in Bennington. An active member of the Woodford community, Scott was a former member of both the zoning board and select board and had also donated many hours of time to the town completing various jobs that needed to be done. Scott loved all types of wildlife and especially his pets. Survivors include his wife, Catherine “Kitty” Smith of Woodford; his mother, Phyllis Smith of Woodford; three step-children, Carol Sanborn of West Buxton, Maine, Charles Sumner Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Katie Cottrell of Maine; two sisters, Marilyn Gardner of Pownal and Pamela Monroe of North Bennington; two brothers, Gerald A. Smith and William A. Smith, both of Woodford; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Scott was predeceased by a brother, Joseph C. Smith. The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington, officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Woodford Cemetery.
