Walter P. Smith - Class Of 1951

Walter P. Smith

Walter Paul “Sonny” Smith, of Perkasie, PA, passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at his daughter’s home in Oakford, PA.  He was 86.

            He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley Ann (Wenhold) Smith who died on December 6, 2002.

            Born on October 16, 1932, on Vista Street in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Walter Crawford and Helen (Jenaskie) Smith. He was a 1950 graduate of Bensalem High School, Bensalem, PA, where he played on the Boys’ Football Team and was named to the Bensalem High School Hall of Fame.

            He served with the U. S. Army Signal Corps running telephone lines in Germany during the time of his enlistment from February 1953 to February 1955.

            Walter was employed as a lineman and supervisor for the former Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania, working throughout Bucks County from 1951 until retiring in 1986.

            In his younger years, he played football for the Bristol Saints and, known as “Hurricane Smith”, he pitched fast pitch softball for Marek’s Café, in Hulmeville, PA, for 22 years.

            A 32nd Degree Mason with the Lehigh Consistory S.P.R.S., Valley of Allentown, he was a member and Past Master of the Philadelphia Masonic Lodge No. 126.  Also, an avid painter of oil and water colors, he was a member of the Doylestown Art League.  Walter was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies Baseball as well as the Philadelphia Eagles Football Teams.

            He is survived by three daughters, Sandra Adams, of Langhorne, PA, Patricia Mengel, of Langhorne, PA, and Diane Danieluk and her husband Kenneth, of Oakford, PA; seven grandchildren, Tori (Samantha) Adams, Kelly (Kristen) Adams and Layne (Kyle) Gibbons, Victoria and James Mengel, and Alex and Tessa Danieluk; one great grandson, Jameson Adams; a brother, Charles Jenaskie, of Bensalem, PA; and many close nieces, nephews and friends.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Haskel Smith.

            His Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 30, 2018, at the Bernard Suess Funeral Home, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie, PA, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.  Interment will follow in Sellersville Cemetery, Sellersville, PA.
