Survived By: Wife Dena, Son Dr Charles Daniel Phillips (Terri), Daughter Julie Londergan (Michael), Daughter Nicole Bailey, Adopted Daughter Diana Londergan (Alan), Adopted Daughter Krista Vaughan (Thomas).

As a student at Benson High School Don excelled in academics and played on several of the school’s varsity sports teams. In his senior year he was awarded a National Merit Scholarship and also qualified for the Morehead Scholarship. He graduated from Benson High School in 1961. He attended one year at NC State Univ in Raleigh and then joined the US Navy. Under the Naval Engineering and Science Education Program he entered the Engineering and Science Department at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He Graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and later received a Masters Degree from the University of Southern California He served honorably in the US Navy in the Admiral Rickover nuclear submarine force until retiring as Lieutenant Commander. After retirement he returned to the Navy as a contractor and then civilian employee for SPAWARSYSCEN Atlantic. Throughout his life Don was loved and respected by not only his children and family but also by his many friends and classmates. He never missed an opportunity to spend time with them and always enjoyed family and school gatherings. He had a quiet, warm, calm way about him that put you at ease. He had a quick wit and could always be counted on for a good laugh. He was extremely bright and knowledgeable about numerous subjects and could expound as an expert on many.
