In Memory

Gregory Hermann

Chief Warrant Officer Gregory William Hermann was born March 21, 1951 in Benton Harbor and graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1969. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was selected for Warrant Officer Candidate School and trained as a helicopter pilot. His tour of duty in Vietnam with the 60th Assault Helicopter Company (the “Ghost Riders”) of the 10th Aviation Battalion began in May 1971. On April 18, 1972, he was co-piloting a Huey in low clouds around a mountain in Phu Yen Province when it clipped a ridge, crashed and burst into flames. Phu Yen is located in eastern Vietnam along the South China Sea. All four crewmen and two ROK (South Korean) soldiers died. He was survived by his parents (Harry and Violet) and a sister (Cheryl Ann). He is buried in North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma.
