Missionary Sharon S. Powell

Missionary Sharon Sue Powell was born In Benton Harbor, MI on June 25, 1951 and was 
the ninth child to L.C. and Lula Reed. She attended Benton Harbor Area Schools 
and Lake Michigan College. She was employed by the State of Michigan and 
eventually retired from the Department of Human Services after 30 years of 
employment. 

She accepted The Lord as her personal savior at the age of 11. She was a part of 
Reed temple Church of God in Christ from its inception, making her a founding 
member. She faithfully served under her father until his death and then her brother, 
Pastor Philemon Reed where she held many positions in the church, ranging from 
Sunday School Superintendent, Musician, Choir Director, Prayer & Bible 
Band Leader, and various other Auxiliaries. 

She married the love of her life Curtis Lee Powell in 1972. They enjoyed 39 
years of marriage until his death in 2011. Although she didn’t have children of 
her own, she was a mother to many of her nieces and nephews. She especially 
played an extraordinary role in the lives of Afriyie Randle, Aroson Randle, Tyra 
Reed, and April Carter to name a few. 

She was preceded in death by her parents L.C. and Lula Reed; 4 Sisters, Johnnie Mae McClinton, Joanne Reed, Wavia Beatrice Thomas, and Linda Carol Shelton; as well as 2 Brothers, Wade Reed and Samuel Reed. 

She leaves to mourn her death 2 sisters, Erma Jean Reed, Audra Diane (Charles) Carson; 
5 brothers, Arthur Reed, Jon Stacey (Queen Elizabeth) Reed, Philemon (Willie Mae) Reed, Kenneth Wayne (Saundra) Reed, Amos (Robin) Reed; God Children Kathy Tyler, Mykia Carter, and Sheila Wright; Uncle, Arstell Hammons, Aunt, Mazie Wright; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, along with church and extended family. 

She will be best remembered for her melodious voice with the rendition of “The 
King is Coming” as well as her altruistic ways, love for music, love of her 
church and love for her family.
