Pfc. Thomas James Scullen, an 18-year-old Marine from Berea, was killed March 2, 1968 by fragments from enemy mortars lobbed on the besieged garrison at Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. The youth was the son of James and Joan Scullen, 634 Grayton Road. Scullen enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967, shortly before he was graduated from Berea High School. A month after graduation, in July, he went on active duty. In December he was sent to Vietnam. Although he was one of the beleaguered marines dug in at Khe Sanh, he kept writing to his parents that he wasn't in serious danger and to stop worrying. "Nothing would stop him. He had wanted to go so long we couldn't talk him out of it," said his father, a Navy veteran of World War II. Pfc. Scullen was born May 9, 1949 in the Philadelphia Naval Hospital while his father was in service. The family moved here while he was an infant. He attended Holy Name High School and graduated from Berea High School. He was survived by is parents, four brothers and four sisters, Robert, Gina, Linda, Cathy, Patrick, James, Rita and Richard. He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Filler and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Vingle.

Pfc. Scullen is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Information as gathered from the Cleveland Press & Plain Dealer, March 10, 11 & 18, 1968.
