Joe Townley had to be one of the bravest people I've known. In our junior year (class of '68) along with Anna Walker, he was one of two students who came to Clarke County High School from every class at Johnson-Williams School as our system "tested the waters" of integration.
Joe was an outstanding human being in every way. He was a good student, a multi-sport athlete, a bit of a prankster in class, and became a vital part of our class the minute he became part of our class. His obituary describes a person who was a well-rounded, charismatic, and caring person for his entire life.
It struck me very hard to hear of his death. That he had "fallen off the class radar" many years before his death was so sad.
We will always remember him with great fondness.

Carol:
I could not have said it better or stronger. The challenges that Joe and Anna muct have faced were incomprehensible but they both became friends and very valuable members of our class. I very much regret I lost contact with Joe after his freshman year at Virginia State and was never able to re-establish contact in his later years. I miss him.
