Thomas Levi Knight, R.N., Ph.D., 57 of Stephens City, Virginia died Sunday, February 3, 2008 in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Dr. Knight was born August 21, 1950 in Winchester Memorial Hospital, the son of the late Vida Levi Knight and Homer Edward Knight. He was a 1968 graduate of Clarke County High School and member of the Berryville Baptist Church.
Dr. Knight's career in health care began at the Winchester Memorial Hospital in 1969. In 1971, Dr. Knight graduated from the Clarke-Frederick-Warren-Winchester School of Practical Nursing. He continued his nursing education by receiving his Associate in Arts in Nursing from Shenandoah University in 1973, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from George Mason University in 1981, Master of Science in Nursing Administration from Marymount University in 1983, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Health Care Admininstration from Madison University in 2004. He was licensed as a registered nurse, VA, WV, MD, and the District of Columbia. He was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National Honor Society for Nursing, and the American Assembly for Men in Nursing.
A nurse for over 37 years, Dr. Knight excelled in the nursing administration and education arenas. He was the Assistant Director of Nursing at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal, VA; Associate Chief Nursing Service for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA and Atlanta, GA; Branch Director for PSA HealthCare in Springfield, VA; Administrative Nursing Coordinator for Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, VA; Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer for Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, DC; Director/Dean School of Nursing at Medical Careers Institute at ECPI College of Technology in Manassas, VA, and most recently, Assistant Professor of Nursing in the undergraduate program at Mountain State University in Martinsburg, WV and the graduate program in Beckeley, WV. He loved teaching and spent many hours mentoring and encouraging students.
Dr. Knight is survived by his companion of 39 years, Carl A. Baker of Stephens City, his brother, John C. Knight of Stephens City; his sister, Robyn K. Seaver of Brandon, FL; his maternal aunts, Helen L. McDonald and Myra G. Levi, both of Berryville; and first cousins, Nan L. O'Brien of Berryville, VA, Gail L. Kercheval of Vienna, VA, Patricia L. Boyce and John A. Levi III, both of Winchester, and Jenny L. Tomblin of Fincastle, VA.
First cousins, Mary Ellen Williamson, Jay Stephen Levi, Edward C. Levi, Jr., Judith L. Sours, and Edward C. Levi, Jr., all of Berryville, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home in Berryville on Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 7:00-9:00 P. M.
Dr. Knight's funeral will be at 2:00 P. M. on Friday, February 8, 2008 at the Berryville Baptist Church with Dr. William E. Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.
Pallbearers will be William Boyce, Ronald Kercheval, William Sours, David Sours, Douglas Sours, and Eugene Williamson
