Where Did All That Money Go???

Remember when we graduated from Lehigh and we all pledged $20 for 20 years to our Class Gift?  Did you ever wonder how much was raised and where it all went?

Well, in 1995, Lehigh disbursed our Class Gift, as follows:

$250,000 - Zoellner Arts Center

$200,000 - 1975 Scholarship Fund

$200,000 - Taylor Gym Renovation

$45,000 - Packard Lab Auditorium Renovations

$25,000 - Computer and Video-Aided Classroom

$21,153 - Campus Signage

For a Grand Total of ..... $741,153

Not too shabby, huh?

So, when you come back for Reunion 2010 on May 21-22, you can reap the benefits of our Class Gift because ...

We will be getting together Friday evening and Saturday noon for events at the Zoellner Arts Center, just in view of Taylor Gym, and it will take a WHOLE lot of signage to get some of us where we are going .... if you haven’t been back to campus for a while, you’ll see what I mean!  There are some walkways where roads used to be and, I’ve got to be honest, when I was there in August, I drove in front of Williams Hall, like we used to be able to do to get to the U.C., then up behind the U.C. to get to upper campus .... not anymore ... a few more dollars toward signage and I would NOT have ended up driving BEHIND Williams Hall to get the heck out of that situation!!!!  But, I digress ....

Let’s talk about the 1975 Scholarship Fund!  I know of at least five students who have benefited from your generosity and I have letters from a couple of them, THANKING each and everyone of us for making their Lehigh education possible!  One student wrote, “Without your generosity, it would have been almost impossible for me to have gotten to where I am right now in life.”  This is a student who graduated in 2006 with a B.S. in Environmental Engineering and who scored in the 85th percentile on the LSAT!  Another student wrote, “My education over the last three and a half years has been very fulfilling.  Although I wish that I had even more time to take courses that interested me, overall I am satisfied with the number of courses outside of my major that I have been able to take and I feel that I have indeed become a well-rounded student.  Within mathematics, I explored nearly every branch I could as an undergraduate and have taken almost all of the upper-level courses available.  Your financial contributions allowed me to devote all of the time and energy necessary for my studies and have certainly yielded a highly rewarding, successful college experience.”  Nicely done, members of the Class of 1975.

So, let’s get together at Reunion 2010 and raise a toast to each other and what we have been able to do to support Lehigh and contribute to the success of its students!

See you SOON!!!!

Kathy (Kane) Schlegel

Class President, Reunion Chair

Kathy,

Sounds pretty good.  If 754 of us graduated, then we have exceeeded our commitment of $302K by more than double.   Looks like we did a good job!

Thank you for the Class Gift summary, seeing concrete results from a small start so long ago is very rewarding.  I also like that the University, or whoever were the decision makers, included a student scholarship.  That was a key reason why I went to Lehigh, and I hope our contributions will lead to that decision for other high school students trying to stretch for the best opportunity they can.
