Harley T. Stallard

BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Harley T. Stallard, 86, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Norton following a lengthy illness. He was born May 12, 1917, the son of the late Jerry Trigg and Flora (Taylor)
Stallard. Mr. Stallard was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served as a president of the Big Stone Gap Lions Club. A member of both the First Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap and the North Side Baptist Church in Dade City, Fla., Mr. Stallard was a deacon and taught the Men’s Sunday School Class in Big Stone Gap since 1954.  Mr. Stallard enjoyed a career of 42 years with the Wise County School System. He taught in a one-room school house, drove a bus and taught high school English.  He served as the first principal of Powell Valley High School. He was a director of instruction for the Wise County School System. Mr. Stallard retired in 1978 as Wise County superintendent of schools.  He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Bunnie R. Stallard; four sons: H.T. Stallard Jr. of Hartsville, Tenn.; Robert R. Stallard of Blacksburg, Va.; Michael Stallard of Sacramento, Calif.; and Larry P. Stallard of Mt. Sterling, Ky.; three daughters: Anita Dorton of Jonesborough, Tenn.; Nancy Wampler of Big Stone Gap, Va.; and Addie Crawley of Catawba, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.  Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap, with the Rev. Bob Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
