I read Carol's obituary with sadness, but I am happy to learn that Carol had an interesting and love-filled life.  I did not know her well, but I was aware that she had a lot of grief as she was growing up.  When we were in eighth grade, Carol's mother died.  I remember Carol's empty desk behind me in Mr. Jack Johnson's homeroom at Lincoln for a week of so, and her quietness when she returned.  (In a strange coincidence, Mr. Johnson's obituary appeared in today's Gazette.)  During our last year in high school, Carol's sister died in childbirth, along with the baby.  Again, Carol responded with quiet dignity--something I don't believe I could have managed at that age.  I am sorry I will not see her again to tell her how much I admired her courage and acceptance. Unfortunately, at the time I didn't realize how extraordinary those qualities are in one so young.
