NEW: 15-year-old Janiya Simmons, a freshman student at Wenonah High School in Birmingham, passed away at UAB Hospital following a shooting in Bessemer Monday night. Bessemer police said it appears Simmons was involved in "gunplay between friends" when she was shot in the chest with an AK-47 style rifle. BPD said 18-year-old Raukeem Cunningham is facing a manslaughter charge.
Simmons’ grieving mother issued a statement late Tuesday as she wants people to remember her daughter.
"[Janiya] loves to do hair, cook and was big on fashion. She was full of love and joy had a outgoing personality and will truly be missed," Simmons' mother Darshana Robinson said.
